Most people are paying for subscriptions they have forgotten: the app you installed for one project, the trial that auto-renewed, the service you "meant to cancel." Where subscriptions hide
Recurring charges live in four places, and each needs its own check:
- Apple App Store — subscriptions bought inside iPhone/iPad apps.
- Google Play — subscriptions bought inside Android apps.
- The company's website — streaming, software, and newsletter tools that bill you directly.
- Payment providers — PayPal, Apple Pay, and card issuers that hold recurring agreements.
Step 1: Check the app stores
Apple (iPhone/iPad)
Open Settings → your name → Subscriptions. This lists every active subscription. Tap each one to see the price and renewal date, and choose Cancel Subscription for anything you do not use. Also check Settings → your name → Payment & Shipping for any connected payment methods you no longer use.
Google Play (Android)

Step 3: Check your payment providers
PayPal
Log in at paypal.com → Settings → Payments → Manage automatic payments. This lists every company with a recurring agreement, even ones that are not app subscriptions. Cancel anything you do not want.
Bank and card statements
Review your last three statements line by line. Note every recurring charge (many use different names, like the merchant's parent company). Then contact your bank to set up alerts for recurring charges, so future renewals are visible instead of silent.
Step 4: Decide what to keep
For each subscription, ask three questions:
- Have I used it in the last 30 days?
- Would I notice if it disappeared?
- Is it the only service of its kind I am paying for? (Streaming overlaps are the most common duplicate spend.)
