This page explains how UsefulOrbit tests, evaluates and reviews browser extensions, software tools and online services.
Hands-on testing
Whenever possible, we install and use the products we review in real-world conditions. We test core features, user interface, performance, privacy settings and reliability across the browsers and platforms the product supports. If a product claims to work on Chrome, Firefox and Edge, we test it on each one.
For security tools, we evaluate whether warnings appear at appropriate times, whether configuration is clear, and whether the tool creates unnecessary friction during normal browsing.
Evaluation criteria
Our reviews focus on practical questions that matter to real users:
- Does it solve the problem it claims to solve? A tool must deliver real, measurable value.
- Is it easy to use? Complex setup, confusing design or unclear instructions reduce usefulness.
- How does it handle privacy? We prefer tools that process data locally, request only necessary permissions, and disclose data practices clearly.
- Is it fairly priced? We compare free and paid features against competing options and note when a free alternative is sufficient.
- Is support responsive? We consider documentation quality, update frequency, and how easy it is to get help.
Scoring and recommendations
We do not use paid star ratings or automatically generated scores. Recommendations are based on our testing, research and judgment. Products we build ourselves are reviewed with the same standards, and we clearly disclose our ownership.
A "recommended" label means we would use the product ourselves or feel comfortable suggesting it to a friend or family member.
Updates and long-term accuracy
Software changes quickly. We revisit reviews periodically and update them when a product changes significantly, changes its pricing, or alters its privacy policy. Older reviews are marked with their last updated date.
